Protecting your skin from the sun is so important. Especially for children. But finding the right sunscreen isn’t always easy. Many big names and longtime brands are not always the best choice. Some are downright harmful.
I’ve read so many articles recently about the dangerous chemicals in sunscreens and the horrible reactions children have had from them.
I’ve done a lot of research to find out which ingredients you want to look for in a sunscreen and which ones you should avoid.
A mineral sunscreen is best and you want to look for the active ingredients zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide.
You want to be sure that your sunscreen does not contain these chemical filters…
Which leads me to my main focus today…
A suncare focused skincare company that I have recently come across that is a breath of fresh air in the middle of the cloud of toxic sunscreens that still fill the shelves today.
The family owned and operated company, Block Island Organics. All of their products are free of parabens, sulfates, phthalates, dyes and artificial fragrances. They never test on animals, use vegan-based formulas, are recyclable and biodegradable and made in the USA! Like I said… breath of fresh air.
Sunscreen on a mission
The founders are a husband and wife team, Kelly and Will from Block Island, Rhode Island. Their mission is “To give everyone access to safe, effective, and lovable non-toxic suncare and skincare products.” Pretty solid mission if you ask me!
They genuinely care about educating everyone they can about the proper way to care for your skin and protect it from the sun. So much that their blog is full of helpful information such as the correct definition of SPF to the potential toxicity of many common sunscreen ingredients such as the ones I mentioned above.
One of their goals is to help people make sense of the confusion and keep us up to date with current skin science. There are endless sources with information on suncare and sun damage (some accurate, some not) but I’m thankful to have one trustworthy source I can turn to and not get lost in the sea of information.
They are 100% open and honest about each and every ingredient that goes into their products and their reasons for choosing them.
What I love is that the safety and quality of their ingredients is their top priority but, without sacrificing quality, they don’t always go for the organic option because it would cause them to raise their prices too much. Their goal is to keep their prices as low as possible. How refreshing is that?!
EWG’s Best Sunblock List, 4 Years Running!
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment.
They’ve named Block Island Organics Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 an EWG Best Beach and Sport Sunscreen for 4 years now.
The Natural Face Moisturizer SPF 30 is an EWG Best Moisturizer with an SPF for 3 years.
This is a big deal, my friends! As well as great piece of mind that they really are a top-notch suncare company!
Advocates for the environment
Choosing to use a mineral sunscreen rather than a chemical one greatly helps to protect the environment.
Chemical sunscreens are dangerous to coral reefs, so much so that Hawaii has put a ban on them. I won’t get into this too much but there’s a post on their blog that covers it in detail. It’s very interesting, you can read it here.
Also, microbeads are terrible for the environment. I wasn’t aware of just how much until reading this post. Block Island Organics doesn’t use them and pledges not to in the future.
My Personal Experience
The first time I used the Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 I was pleasantly surprised by how nice it felt going on. I actually said “ooh!” out loud and surprised my toddler, ha!
It really does feel very nice when you put it on and it absorbs and blends in really quickly. It doesn’t leave any residue or sticky feeling at all! It also smells pleasant and washes off your hands easily which definitely surprised me.
I’ve used it religiously on both myself and my 2 yo daughter who’s a redhead and extremely fair and it’s worked really well. No complaints at all! (She was thrilled to assist with the photos! :))
Honestly, the more I read on the blog and get to know this company, the more I’m convinced that this is the only sunscreen I will use from here on out.
They stand for so many positive values and it feels good to purchase from a company that is trying to make a difference in the world and in our health.
If it seems like I can’t say enough good things about this company, it’s because I can’t. I can’t help it. With so much negativity going on in the world today, it gives me hope, seeing people that are trying to make a positive impact and not just going after the almighty dollar.
So if I can spread the word and make it a little easier for people to take good care of their skin and health while standing behind a company that wants to make the world a better place, then you betcha, I’m going to do it! 😁
So to sum it up…
Block Island Organics…
- Is a small family owned business
- Uses all natural ingredients, no chemicals
- Cares deeply about the environment
- Does everything possible to keep prices low
- Is vegan and cruelty-free
- Has been named EWG Best Beach and Sport Sunscreen 4 years in a row
- They educate consumers on the proper way to protect their skin from the sun, the effects of sun damage and much more. There’s sooo much information on their blog
In my opinion, all these reasons make choosing to use Block Island Organics products a no-brainer.
Try it for yourself
I urge you to give it a try! I really don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Then please leave a comment or shoot me an e-mail, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
